Tsunamis
A tsunami is a series of long ocean waves usually caused by undersea earthquakes, volcanic activity or landslides. The first wave may not be the largest.
Important: Use this guide for education only. Always follow local emergency services and official alerts.
How risk grows
Risk becomes higher when a hazard affects vulnerable buildings, crowded places, weak infrastructure or communities without warning systems and response plans.
Preparedness checklist
- If you feel strong coastal shaking, move inland and uphill immediately.
- Do not wait at the shore to watch waves.
- Return only when authorities say it is safe.
Community response
Good response depends on clear communication, accessible shelters, trained volunteers, reliable power, safe water and rapid support for children, older people and people with disabilities.
